- What is Samsyl®?
- Samsyl® is a patented dietary supplement that supports liver health. It contains a combination of pure, stabilized, and naturally derived S-Adenosylmethionine and the highly bioavailable silybin soy-phosphatidylcholine complex, Siliphos®. Each capsule contains 267 mg of S-Adenosylmethionine with 80 mg of Siliphos®. Samsyl is available in a 45 count.

- Why does Samsyl® contain both S-Adenosylmethionine and Silybin?
- The combination of SAMe and silybin in Samsyl provides a multi-faceted approach to liver support. Deficiencies of SAMe can contribute to negative effects of cell function and structure in the liver and throughout the body. Supplemental administration of SAMe has been shown to result in improvements in hepatocellular function without cytotoxicity. Silybin, as found in Samsyl in the form of Siliphos®, has been shown, in a pilot study, to have beneficial effects on liver function.

- What are the benefits of supporting my liver health with Samsyl®?
- The liver plays a key role in metabolism, mainly transforming harmful substances into by-products for elimination from the body. As such, the liver is continuously exposed to many toxic substances, including free radicals. An unhealthy liver can result from a compromise in local antioxidant capabilities (i.e. – decreased liver glutathione levels).
Samsyl helps to normalize hepatic enzymes, increase hepatic glutathione levels, and protect overall hepatic tissue.

- Can Samsyl® be taken in conjunction with other supplements or prescription medications?
- As is the case with all supplements and medications, those taking Samsyl should consult with their physician when planning on taking this product along with prescription medications.
Individuals with bipolar disorder (manic depressive illness) should not take this or any other product containing SAMe except under a physician’s supervision.

- Are there any potential side effects with Samsyl®?
- The active ingredients in Samsyl (i.e.– SAMe and Silybin) are generally well tolerated. Assessments of oral administration of Samsyl via an LD50 study revealed no toxicity. Side effects associated specifically with SAMe are generally mild. Literature also cites side effects of varying incidence including: insomnia, headaches, lack of appetite, constipation, nausea, dry mouth, sweating, dizziness, and nervousness 1-2. The serotonergic-modulating properties of SAMe give it the potential to interact with medications that can raise serotonin levels. Thus, Samsyl should not be taken concurrently with any medications for depression or bipolar disorder, including monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), as well as dextromethorphan, meperidine, pentazocine, or tramadol except under a physician’s supervision3-4. Those taking levodopa for Parkinson’s disease should consult with their physician prior to using Samsyl as SAMe could reduce its effectiveness over time5. Mild side effects associated specifically with the silybin soy-phosphatidycholine complex have been reported and include gastrointestinal disturbances (i.e.–nausea, heartburn, upset stomach) and transient headache6-8. Those taking loop diuretics should consult with their physician prior to using Samsyl as silybin and SAMe can increase glutathione levels, thus there is the potential for increased metabolic clearance of the diuretics9-11. As is the case with all supplements and medications, allergic reactions are uncommon but may occur. Those suspecting they may have an allergic reaction should consult with their physician.

- Are other brands equivalent to Samsyl®?
- No. While other S-adenosylmethionine and silybin products may be available as separate items in health food stores and over-the-counter pharmacies, there can be significant variance in product quality and strengths. Samsyl offers a unique, patented formulation containing both ingredients in their highly bioactive form in an easy to swallow capsule.
