"Not All Brands Meet Label Claim"
Oke S, Aghazadeh-Habashi A, Weese JS, and Jamal F. Equine Veterinary Journal 2006;38(1):93-95.
Whether a product meets label claim (contains the levels of active ingredients stated on the label) is important when choosing a joint health supplement. Levels of glucosamine in 23 equine joint supplements were assayed in this study. Nine (or 39.1%) of the supplements were found to contain less glucosamine than was listed on the product label with four (or 17.4%) of the supplements containing below 30% of the amount claimed.
The study authors also noted that ten grams of glucosamine daily is the current recommended administration amount for equine use. While all Cosequin Equine products deliver at least this amount to an average-sized horse during the loading phase, only five of the supplements in the study provide this amount if following label instructions.
It is best to check with your appropriate authority regarding its regulations or restrictions on supplement usage.
