ASU stands for avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, an ingredient concentrated directly from avocados and soybeans that is used for joint health. ASU has been shown to improve joint function and comfort levels. Studies using cartilage cells have shown that ASU lowers the expression or production of several compounds involved in the process of cartilage breakdown in joints. ASU complements the positive effects of the other active ingredients in Dasuquin. The glucosamine in Dasuquin is synergistic with low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate and has been shown in cartilage cell studies to be synergistic with ASU. Of note NMX1000® avocado/ soybean unsaponifiables, FCHG49 glucosamine hydrochloride and TRH122 low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate together were shown in cell studies to be better than the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate alone at inhibiting expression of several agents involved in the breakdown of cartilage. How do I know if my dog needs Dasuquin?

It may be a good time to ask your veterinarian about Dasuquin if you notice that your dog slows down during walks, does not get up easily, or is reluctant to climb stairs or jump into the car. Your veterinarian will examine your dog to determine if he/she could benefit from Dasuquin. My dog’s food contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Do I still need Dasuquin?

Yes. None of the foods contain the same researched combination of high quality ingredients in Dasuquin. The amount of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in dog food is minimal. Even if these diets contained high quality glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, according to the amounts listed on the labels a dog would need to consume much more than a serving to obtain the amounts found in Dasuquin. In addition, both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may degrade when subjected to the heat or extreme pressure in the manufacturing process of commercial dog food.

What should I look for when giving Dasuquin?

Observe your dog closely, and notice whether your dog seems more comfortable doing those activities he seemed reluctant doing or had some trouble doing previously. Changes in your dog’s comfort level may occur gradually. Allow time for your dog to respond. It may take 4-6 weeks, though some dogs may respond sooner.

What else can I do for my dog?

Your veterinarian may recommend exercise, which is important for optimal joint function as well as weight control and the overall health of your pet. Joint movement is needed to circulate fluid around the cartilage as well as to bring nutrients and to remove waste products. It has been shown that when joints are immobilized, cartilage structures deteriorate at a rapid rate. You should ask your veterinarian, but in most cases, moderate exercise is recommended. Walking on sand or another soft surface or even swimming will help circulate needed nutrients and reduce excessive stress to the cartilage. It is important not to push your pet but to exercise at a comfortable pace.

Are there any safety concerns with Dasuquin?

While sensitivity to avocados has been reported in a few dogs, taking Dasuquin tablets is not the same as eating whole avocados. The ASU in Dasuquin has been evaluated in a safety study in dogs, and no adverse effects were noted from administration. There are no known contraindications or known interactions between Dasuquin and any drug or nutritional supplement.

What strengths and sizes is Dasuquin available in?

Dasuquin is available in two different strengths because one size does not fit all dogs. Dasuquin for Small to Medium Dogs has been optimized for dogs under 60 pounds. Dasuquin for Large Dogs contains a formula optimized for dogs 60 pounds and over. Both formulations are packaged in 84 count and 150 count bottles. The 84 count size is a convenient size for use during the initial 4-6 week loading period, while the 150 count economy size is more cost-effective and is ideal for long-term use. Dasuquin is also available in a formula with MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). Your veterinarian can advise you on which formula is best for your dog.

Some veterinarians may recommend Dasuquin to help maintain urinary bladder health. The inner lining of the bladder wall is protected by a layer, which contains some of the same compounds as are found in cartilage. This layer keeps urine and the waste products contained within it from seeping into and affecting the lining. Since the low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate found in Dasuquin is available to more than just cartilage cells, the bladder may use it to help support this protective layer.

Should I give Cosequin to all of my dogs?

Research in dogs administered Cosequin has shown that if Cosequin is given prior to an injury, the animal returns to normal function much more quickly. In light of this research, Cosequin is recommended to protect cartilage in dogs that are overweight, working breeds, and large breeds, as well as the average “weekend warrior.” In order to gain the protective benefits of Cosequin in healthy animals, a low level of Cosequin may be used. The level for these pets varies, but the suggested maintenance level given every other day may be adequate.

Cosequin offers unparalleled safety. What response should I see in my horse when giving Cosequin ASU?

How do I administer the powder to my horse?

Detailed instructions are contained in the package inserts. The recommended initial administration period is two to four weeks. Following the initial administration period, the amount of powder can be reduced to an economical maintenance schedule. Once consistent improvement has been seen, in some cases these maintenance levels can be further reduced to an every other day administration. To meet the demands prior to and during an event or strenuous outing, the administration can be increased back to the initial amount. When examining the label of other products they may appear to contain the same ingredients as Cosequin Equine Powder, but do they?

Many products try to compare to Cosequin, but there is no generic equivalent. Chondroitin sulfate is a large molecule that is difficult to absorb. Cosequin is the only brand that uses the TRH122®* low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate, which has been evaluated and shown bioavailable. How can Marin help my pet's liver?

Silybin is the most active part of an extract known as silymarin. Silybin/silymarin has been shown to support liver function by acting as an antioxidant. This means that it helps to counteract or protect against the harmful effects on the liver of “reactive” oxygen compounds. Silybin helps the flow of bile through the liver. Bile contains digestive enzymes along with other substances and aids in digestion and absorption of nutrients from your pet’s diet. Additionally, silybin may support levels of a substance called glutathione, which is the liver’s major “detoxifying” agent. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that has also been shown to help protect liver function. Zinc supplementation may be beneficial in dogs with long-term decreased liver function as these dogs often have low liver zinc levels. Zinc also has antioxidant effects. Zinc participates in many enzymatic reactions within the body, and any deficiency may have harmful effects. Zinc is not in Marin For Cats as deficiencies have not been noted in cats.

When should I see an improvement in my pet’s condition?

For a sudden diarrhea in which the pet otherwise appears normal, the Proviable-KP paste should be administered for 48-72 hours to help to form the stools; however some pets may respond in a shorter period of time. The Proviable-DC capsules should be continued after the stools have started to form, as recommended by your veterinarian. If no improvement is noted, or if your pet is not eating or is vomiting, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Why do I need Proviable when there are direct-fed microbials in my pet’s food?

Direct-fed microbials that are supplied in pet foods may or may not be live when ingested by the pet due to the manufacturing processes of the food and therefore may be ineffective. In addition, there may not be sufficient numbers of the direct-fed microbials to elicit a response, and the strains included in the food may not have beneficial properties. Proviable products in comparison provide a guaranteed concentration of live bacteria and provide multiple beneficial strains.

Quality of probiotic products has been and continues to be an issue in the veterinary market. Some products may not contain live probiotic microorganisms or may not contain high enough numbers of the direct-fed microbials to help support intestinal health. Can I give my pet yogurt instead of Proviable®?

Yogurt products may contain direct-fed microbials but not usually at concentrations necessary to help populate the intestinal tract of the dog or cat in order to elicit a beneficial response, especially during times of imbalance. Direct-fed microbials should be administered based on the recommendation of your veterinarian. They are not recommended for pets that are critically ill or that have a suppressed immune system, or in animals that are severely dehydrated or vomiting. There are no known side effects with direct-fed microbials when administered as recommended by your veterinarian. The Proviable-KP paste should only be used for 48-72 hours unless directed otherwise by your veterinarian, as potentially constipation could result with prolonged use at higher than recommended doses.

The expiration dates are found on the packaging. What is the difference between the paste and the powder?

There are two forms of Proviable-EQ, a paste and a powder. The paste contains two species of yeast, Saccharomyces boulardii and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, that help to restore a balance of the good bacteria in the intestines after acute digestive upset, but can be used long term, intermittently or daily, to support the good bacteria in the intestines. The ground grass based powder contains one yeast species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and is recommended for the daily support and maintenance of a healthy intestinal microflora.

Why are there two yeast species in the paste and only one in the powder?

Saccharomyces boulardii has been shown in research to have beneficial effects on the severity and duration of loose stools in horses.* For this reason, Proviable-EQ paste was formulated for times of acute digestive upset and loose stools, or for the daily maintenance of a healthy hindgut in conjunction with the Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Proviable-EQ powder was developed because of the strength of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the maintenance of hindgut health and support.

To help reestablish healthy intestinal microflora after imbalances have occurred, give the contents of one Proviable-EQ paste tube 3 times daily for up to 72 hours. If no improvement is seen or if your horse stops eating, please consult your veterinarian. To help protect against microfloral imbalances, the Proviable-EQ paste should be administered at 5 ml by mouth once daily for 6 days, or as needed. Some products may not contain live probiotic microorganisms or may not contain viable numbers of the microorganisms to help support intestinal health. Proviable-EQ products on the other hand do contain millions of live probiotic microorganisms and are quality tested to meet label claims. Yeast is the microorganism used in Proviable-EQ as opposed to aerobic (oxygen requiring) bacteria used in many other products because the aerobic bacteria would not survive the anaerobic (without oxygen) environment of the hindgut during fermentation. Therefore, aerobic bacteria based products may be of benefit in the foregut, but the yeast in Proviable-EQ is able to support the fermentation process where the majority of fiber and carbohydrate digestion and absorption occurs.

What is the difference between Welactin Equine and plant-based products (corn oil, flax seed oil, etc)?

Welactin Equine provides long chain Omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA, derived from fish oils. These long chain Omega-3 fatty acids have shown health benefits in multiple species including horses. Fatty acids derived from plant-based sources such as corn, soy, flax and rice bran contain Omega-6 and/or short chain Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-6 fatty acids are considered to be pro-inflammatory which is undesirable. The short chain Omega-3 fatty acids provided in plant-based products may not provide the same health benefits as long chain fatty acids because the conversion of short chain to long chain is inefficient in the horse. Therefore, it is more effective to directly provide long chain Omega-3 fatty acids in the diet with Welactin Equine.

Why is Welactin Equine better than other fatty acid supplements on the market?

Welactin Equine is formulated using quality ingredients and cold water fish sources to supply a quality supplement of long chain Omega-3 fatty acids to the horse that is quality tested to meet label claims. Many other fatty acid supplements on the market may not meet label claims and/or use plant sources to create a supplement consisting of short chain Omega-3 fatty acids. These short chains must be converted to long chain fatty acids in the body in order to be utilized, but this process is not very effective in the horse. Welactin Equine removes the need for this process by directly supplying long chain fatty acids. Studies have shown that fish oil sources of fatty acids, like Welactin Equine, are more effective in supporting immune function and increasing levels of EPA and DHA in the blood and tissues than plant-based products.
