New study supports the role of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate in the management of joint health
Lancaster, SC February 2018 – Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, Inc. (“Nutramax”) is pleased to announce the results of a recently published in vitro study* that further supports the use of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), glucosamine, and chondroitin sulfate in the management of joint health. These results build on earlier research demonstrating that the combination inhibits mediators involved in cartilage breakdown, and by doing so helps to protect joint health.
The study showed that the combination of NMX1000® ASU, TRH122® Chondroitin Sulfate, and FCHG49® Glucosamine inhibited production of monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1, CCL-2) and prostaglandin E-2 (PGE2), and nuclear translocation of NF-κB in cytokine-activated equine chondrocytes. MCP-1 is a chemokine that has recently been identified as playing a key role in the inflammatory process that can lead to cartilage breakdown and joint discomfort. Phenylbutazone, while able to almost completely block PGE2 and reduce NF- κB translocation, slightly increased MCP-1 production in all cultures.
The researchers concluded that targeting multiple pathways through a multimodal approach may be more effective in reducing the effects of mediators involved in the breakdown of cartilage, but recognized the need for more research.
“It is exciting to see new research that examines recently recognized compounds that influence joint health,” said Stacey Buzzell, DVM; Equine Technical Services Manager for Nutramax. “This shows the impact that supplements can have when used in a multimodal approach to joint health management.”
NMX1000® ASU, TRH122® Chondroitin Sulfate, and FCHG49® Glucosamine are found in Cosequin® ASU and Cosequin® ASU Plus powders for horses. For more information, visit CosequinEquine.com or call Customer Service at (888) 886-6442.
