Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. Launches Proviable™ Probiotics for Intestinal Health Support

Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables Promote Joint Health

Edgewood, MD: Nutramax Laboratories, Inc. is pleased to announce results of a study* which builds on previous research demonstrating that the supplement ingredient avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) supports joint health. ASU has been shown to improve joint function and comfort levels. This new study demonstrated a mechanism by which ASU may do so and concluded that ASU not only acts on cartilage cells but also has positive effects on other cells in the joint.

The in vitro study, published in November, showed that ASU inhibited expression or production of mediators that are involved in cartilage breakdown in chondrocytes (cartilage cells). Researchers also evaluated effects of ASU on THP-1 monocyte/macrophage cells, which act like the monocyte/macrophages found in the synovial lining of the joint. Monocyte-macrophages also secrete the mediators that play a role in cartilage breakdown. ASU was noted to inhibit mediator expression in the THP-1 cells as well indicating that ASU has far-reaching effects in the joint.

ASU is found in the joint health supplement Dasuquin® for dogs and cats and in Cosequin® ASU for horses. Dasuquin combines FCHG49® glucosamine hydrochloride and TRH122® low molecular weight chondroitin sulfate with NMX1000® avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, while Cosequin ASU contains methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) in addition to those ingredients. Dasuquin for Dogs is available in two formulations (with and without MSM) in tasty chewable tablets. Dasuquin for Cats is available in natural chicken and tuna flavored capsules.
