Selenium is an essential trace mineral needed by the body as an important part of antioxidant enzymes that protect cells against the effects of free radicals produced during normal metabolic activities.  Free radicals can negatively affect cells, including their DNA, which may lead to problems with cell function.  Selenium is also necessary for normal functioning of the immune system and thyroid gland.

Natural sources of dietary selenium are primarily found as protein-bound in foods and as inorganic forms in water and soil.  Distribution of selenium is not uniform.  Some geographic regions contain adequate levels of selenium in the soil and water, while many others are severely deficient.  Some of these areas have been extensively studied to learn more about the detrimental effects of selenium deficiencies.  Medical scientists have discovered important links between selenium deficiencies and conditions that affect health.  In addition, selenium helps counteract the toxicity of some heavy metals.

1. The recommended daily value for adults is 70 mcg.

1. It is recommended that the daily intake (from all sources – food, water and supplements) not exceed 400 mcg.

17. How much Biosel should I take?

1. Each drop of Biosel provides 50 mcg of selenium.  One to four drops may be taken daily in a beverage or by simply putting it in your mouth or on your tongue.
