The Importance of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids like DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are considered “healthy” fatty acids essential to your well-being. Omega-3 fatty acids cannot be made by the body, and therefore, must be obtained through your diet. Plant sources of Omega-3s such as flax seed do not contain DHA and EPA and the human body has very limited ability to form them from the Omega-3 oils in these foods. When made available to the body, DHA and EPA are incorporated into cell membranes (such as heart cells) and support a critical role in helping to maintain their fluidity.

In addition to supporting heart health, research shows that omega-3 fatty acids help support many other systems in the body including kidney function, the immune system, the nervous system, as well as help support your overall health.

Ways to Support Your Heart Health

Show your heart some TLC by adopting these healthy lifestyle choices:

  • Exercise often

  • Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables

  • Avoid excessive alcohol and tobacco use

  • Limit stress

  • Get an adequate amount of sleep

  • Take a high quality Omega-3 fatty acid supplement
  • Don’t I already get enough Omega-3s in my diet?
    • Most likely you do not. DHA and EPA are found in cold water fish like sardines, anchovies and salmon. However, most of the U.S. population eats less than the recommended 2 servings per week. Although some foods, including pastas and cereals, are now being labeled as “fortified with omega-3 fatty acids,” these foods often contain flaxseed oil- a source of short-chain omega-3 fatty acids, not the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids found in DHA and EPA. OmegaMint provides a direct source of the beneficial long-chain omega-3s found in DHA and EPA.

  • I don’t take fish oil because I don’t like the fishy aftertaste. Should I expect this with OmegaMint?
    • Many people have objections to fish oil because of taste or odor. OmegaMint is flavored with peppermint to minimize the fishy aftertaste and repeat typically associated with fish oil supplements.

  • Why does OmegaMint contain soy as stated on the Supplement Facts panel of the label?
    • The natural vitamin E, d-alpha tocopherol, which is used in very small amounts to prevent oxidation of the Omega-3 fatty acids and to preserve the freshness of the product, is sourced from soybean oil.

Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. See nutrition information for total fat content.

1The American Heart Association Scientific Statement reports evidence from prospective studies suggests that combined EPA and DHA supplementation ranging from 500 mg to 1800 mg per day, either as fatty fish or supplements, can provide significant health benefits.

2The American Heart Association recommends those with documented coronary heart disease consume approximately 1000 mg of EPA+DHA daily, preferably from oily fish. EPA+DHA supplements could be considered in consultation with the physician*.
