Nutramax Laboratories Founder Dr. Robert “Dr. Bob” Henderson Honored with South Carolina’s Highest Civilian Award, the Order of the Palmetto

Dr. Robert “Dr. Bob” Henderson, founder of Nutramax Laboratories, has been awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his decades of innovation, leadership, and service to the community. Representative Brandon Newton presented the award at a ceremony on
February 9 at Nutramax Headquarters, celebrating Dr. Henderson’s extraordinary contributions to the state and beyond. 

Representative Newton said, “Dr. Bob has truly changed Lancaster. Through his giving to philanthropic efforts and through setting an example of what a good business can do.”

Established in 1971, the Order of the Palmetto is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and achievements that benefit South Carolina and its citizens. Dr. Henderson joins a distinguished list of honorees whose work has left a lasting impact on the state.

Dr. Henderson founded Nutramax Laboratories in 1992, pioneering advancements in joint health through patented combinations of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, resulting in trusted products such as Cosamin® and Cosequin®. Today, Nutramax employs more than 800 people worldwide, with over 750 based in Lancaster, South Carolina, and continues to lead in the development of supplements for both humans and pets.

Beyond his scientific and business achievements, Dr. Henderson remains a steadfast supporter of Lancaster County and South Carolina. Through projects such as the 4:10 Initiative, he has provided more than $711,000 in vouchers to local businesses. His efforts also extend to ongoing support for law enforcement, education, and animal welfare. These represent just a few of the many notable contributions he has made to the community.
